Rowing machine workouts every runner must do for Cardio and Strength

Doing normal cardio activities can become monotonous and boring after a while, so why don’t you include some new workouts in your routine with a help of concept2 rowers?

A rowing machine not only helps in the development of your upper body but helps in the enhancement of your lower body too, making it the best instrument to have a full body workout with remarkable ease.

So here are a few rowing workouts which you can incorporate into your routine as a substitute for cardio and strength exercises:

High-Level Intense Workout

If you are looking for some really strong workout due to a shortage of time, then this workout is perfect for you.

It will just take 30 minutes of your time and ensure that at the end you have improved strength and endurance.

You can easily lose 300 calories with the help of this exercise but make sure that you keep a check on your legs and ensure that your stroke rate is always between 26 and 32.

How to do: Do a warm up with simple rowing for around 10 minutes. Then for the first part, perform a 30-second sprint using your maximum strength, then take rest for the next 30 seconds.

Repeat this 5 times and then perform air squats for two minutes. In the next part, again sprint for 30 seconds and rest for 30 seconds and continue this pattern for 5 rounds.

Then instead of squats, perform 2 minutes of push up. Now, for the final part repeat the 30 seconds sprint and 30 seconds rest routine for 5 times and finish it with 2-minute air squats. Here’s an awesome HIIT workout.


Constant Distance Workout

This workout focuses on your stroke per minute keeping your distance constant at 1000 meters which ensure that you put in the same amount of power for each stroke for the 1000 meters you need to cover.

It can become tough to hold the same speed and power for a distance and so this is one of the best workouts to challenge yourself and your body.

How to do: Start with 5-10 minutes of warm up. Your workout is divided into 3 sets in which you have to cover 1000 meters each time.

Start your first set with 28 strokes per minute (spm) for the first 1000 meters, once you are done with that do an easy 4 minutes of rowing.

Then start your second set and maintain a spm of 24 through the entire set and again do 4 minutes of easy rowing after it. Finally, finish your workout by performing a set with 26 spm and then cool down with the simple rowing.

Up and Down Workout

Another workout which you can perform which will help you inconsistent rowing and help you burn 450 calories is the equal ratio rowing/rest workout.

In this workout, you make sure that you are maintaining your workout intensity in every interval and taking an equal amount of rest as your rowing period.

Be forewarned that it won’t be easy even though you will be taking an equal amount of rest, so be ready to burn a lot of calories in the 42 minutes of your workout.

How to do: As in all workouts, make sure you warm up for the first 10 minutes and then dive into the actual workout. Once you are done with the warm-up, row for 1 minute and then rest for another minute.

Once you are done with this, immediately start rowing for 2 minutes now and then continue with equal time of rest.

Increase your time after every round till you reach 4 minutes for both rowing and resting and then gradually come back down to 1 minute for rowing and resting.

5 Easy peasy ways to make your running faster and better


Running is simple if you keep it simple and my aim at love for running is exactly that. Don’t get me wrong when I say simple running has its own complications and technical aspects you’ll need to get right in order to be good at it but in the end, it always comes down to your love and will for it. I know initially it’s really tough and you’ll hate it but these 5 ways will make it slightly simpler for you.

Look for inspiration

You’ll be up for a run early morning only if you’re highly motivated but irrespective of it let’s face it the first week is going to be tough. That’s because the muscles take time to adjust and only then does it feel comfortable and fun.

I got inspired when I participated in my first race at school. I lost, came last but now I had a reason to run daily. The aim is to keep the goals realistic mostly but doesn’t shy away from the dreamy ones either.

Take it easy

I know you’ve been told you need to be fast, run like the flash and being slow is simply not acceptable but guess what that’s not entirely true and it is this need for speed that ultimately makes some hate running.

So take a deep breath and calm down and plan your run better. The aim of the run isn’t to get you drained but energize you for the entire day. Increase speed as per your comfort.

Hit the trails

The best and most effective way to take your running up a notch, in my opinion, is to hit the trails. On these rough rocky terrains each step, each stride is different. More muscles are integrated into the run thus building strength and stamina.

Yes, it’s mean and dirty, the trails can be unforgiving especially for the newbies but that’s what it’s all about, enjoy it. To prep, well for the trails a 45-minute rowing machine interval workout daily is perfect for which I would only recommend a Concept 2 Model D Rower. Here are some trail training tips to get started.

Alternate between tough and easy routines

Irrespective of what you’ve been told recovery is an important part of even a runner’s routine. Recovering well is key to muscle building and getting faster. So whether you’ve been on the run for the hills or you’ve been interval training etc. give your muscles rest the next day but if you really must run then my advice would be to take it easy.

Stick on

Like I mentioned before, in the beginning, it’s rough and yes there will be days you’ll just want to lay back but it’s only going to get better by doing it more often. Experience counts, your muscles will adjust so stick to it and don’t give up just yet.

Running Through 2014 {year recap}

I can’t believe another year is almost over and a new one begins. 2014 has been one of those years where I can’t believe how much I have accomplished in 365 days. The first race of 2014 began with my first marathon and ended with a half marathon in November. I ran a total of 8 races this year and 2 virtual races through my local Mom’s Run This Town group. I have had so much support throughout the year from family and friends and I’m so thankful for every single one of them being there through the training and my craziness. So let’s recap 2014 shall we.


I started the new year out right when I ran my first full marathon on January 12th at Walt Disney World. It was the greatest experience of my life and if I could relive it I would.

miles: 34 (after I ran the marathon I hated running and took a break from it)


I ran the Mom’s Run This Town winter virtual race with a great group of Mom’s. I ran 4 miles with my best friend and she ran the entire 4 miles. I was so proud of her.

A week later I ran the Cinderella 5k at Disney and then the following day ran the inaugural Enchanted 10k at Disney. A double dose of Disney. I completed 9.3 miles during that weekend and created my own challenge. I ran the 5k with my best friend and her daughter and ran the 10k with another friend.

I ran Run or Dye with my 7-year-old daughter. Her first 5k, she had such a great time, we walked and ran it. But after this being my 3rd color run. I will never do one again.

In June I took on the #June100miles. I saw this invite going around Facebook that I just had to join in on it. I busted my behind to do this. I ran almost every day just to make it to 100 miles for the month. I did make it with a few days left of the month.

This month I ran a 5k race on 4th of July. I went into this 5k with a goal time. I wanted to PR my 5k from my last 5k PR which was 29 minutes. I couldn’t believe that when I crossed the finish line my time was going to be under 28 minutes. I knocked 2 and 1/2 minutes off my 5k. Completely shocked and that’s when I started focusing on time and pace again.

Again our local Mom’s Run This Town group did the summer virtual race this time the kids were invited in on a 1-mile run. I let me daughter do the 1 mile. We had a great time and after the race, we went over to the splash pad for the end of summer vacation fun.

This was the month I was matched with my IRUN4 buddy. I was matched on October 8th after being on the waiting list since mid-June. I couldn’t believe I was matched a few days before my scheduled half marathon. I ran the Beachside half marathon and it was a half PR for me. I ran this half with my heart and it was all for Nolan.

This month was a little hectic. I ran my first 15k race and PRed. You can read about it {Recap here}.


I flew up to New Hampshire for Thanksgiving week. I ran outside a couple of times while I was up there. I did not expect in a million years that I would be able to complete 3 miles in 25 minutes. NEVER! I couldn’t believe it. Look at that pace!!

On November 30th I ran Space Coast half marathon you can read my {recap here}. I had another goal to finish this race around 2 hours and 10 minutes. I didn’t get my goal time but I did once again PR. I knocked another 8 minutes off finishing in 2:16.

No races this month. I continued to focus on pacing. I’m currently training for the Celebration Half marathon that is in a few weeks. I’m hoping for my 2:10 goal time or better.

26 Things I learned from running a marathon

I ran my first marathon at Disney World on January 12, 2014. Since that race, I have learned so much about myself and all the different things I learned during training and the race itself.

1.  Training is key: There are all kinds of training plans on the internet to try. For my first marathon I did the Jeff Galloway run/walk 3:1 ratio it worked great during training runs but come race day with all the people. It was difficult to keep up with. We eventually ditched the plan and just winged it.

2. Fueling and refueling: This is like gas to a car. You must hydrate and refuel your body especially running this distance. I tried out all kinds of different snacks and drinks during training runs to pick the right thing that didn’t upset my stomach. By the time the actual race came along I don’t think once I remember snacking on much. I brought it all with me but was just so fixated and exhausted. I found that at every water stop I took water and Gatorade and it worked for me.

3. Overpacking: I, unfortunately, fell into this category. I had overpacked my Camelbak causing more weight on my back and I honestly maybe sipped out of my Camelbak maybe once or twice. I also had a bib holder on and also my pouch around my waist to hold my refueling snacks that once again I never touched. I wore my headphones and my iPod shuffle that I gave up on it during mile 2. I was just a mess. WORD OF ADVICE DON’T OVER PACK FOR A MARATHON IT’S NOT FUN!

4. Crazy looking socks: I wore a pair of lime green compression socks to go with my race outfit. I will say this is why I was still walking after I ran a marathon and why the next day I felt amazing and walked Legoland the entire day. They worked for me and I thankfully didn’t have issues with blisters.

5.  These “gross” things all of a sudden become acceptable: I think there were a few times a snot rocket came flying out of my nose and sometimes I’d take a water from the water station and swish it around in my mouth and just spit it out,  my mouth was  so dry and collecting a large amount of saliva. I spit, I farted and almost peed (made it to the bathroom for that one).

6. Running with a friend makes it better: I was thankful to have a friend run this marathon with me. We trained together and went into this race together. I don’t think I would have been able to do it without her support and our encouraging talks along the way. Why did we sign up for this again? Came up often.

7. Training made me fat: Well not fat but I packed on the pounds. I think between the long runs and the fueling. After a serious long run, I’d binge all day on food. Which brings me to this funny. Run-gry anyone?

8. Running in the right shoes: As I said running a marathon is no joke. Running in the right pair of shoes to ensure that distance is a no-brainer.

9. Did I just run a marathon?: Yes, I did and I  have been added to the 1% of the world’s population who has run a marathon.Whoop Whoop!

10. When your social life becomes nonexistent: I mean honestly this is true if you are not working or you are running and if you are not running you are sleeping off that long run you had that day. I swear my social life plummeted and my interaction with my family life as well.

11. Who cares about pace and time: I knew I wasn’t going to finish in my goal time and you know what I didn’t care. I tried to enjoy the experience and just finish the race before the cut-off time. With it being my first marathon it was a personal best anyway.

12.  Being my own cheerleader: I had tons of support at the finish and along the route. But when that support wasn’t there I had to mentally cheer myself on. “You are almost there” wasn’t even an option at mile 10. I had to shut down the outside world a few times and dig deep to cheer myself on.

13. Stretch, stretch, stretch: Wait did I say STRETCH?

14. It’s all mental: I had to sometimes tell yourself is this really a physical game or a mental game. You hit walls on those long mile training runs. To me, it was more of a mental thing rather than physical. I had to shut my brain off sometimes and run with my legs.

15. Oh, there is a medal after this race?: I mean come on let’s be realistic here. Who doesn’t run for the bling?

16. Marathon photos are never pretty: I never bought any of the photos they took of the course. Even my own photos we took of the course they are just appalling.

17.  You learn a lot about yourself: I sure learned a lot about myself. I knew what my body could handle and what it couldn’t.

18.  I never wanted to run a marathon again: Right after I finished I cried and cried that I hated running and I never wanted to do a marathon again. I became that angry runner. I never wanted to lace up my shoes again. This marathon made me hate running. I woke up one day and said “I want to try and run a marathon again”. I mean can’t you just see how thrilled I was when I finally made it to mile 26. Look at those thumbs?

19. The look on peoples faces when you told them you ran a marathon: Then the first thing they ask you “oh how long did that take you?”. Not a congratulations you just endured a life-changing race. But how long it took you is more important. Which brings me to…

20. OH MY GOSH! I ran a marathon: I bragged and I bragged oh and I bragged. I think I told everyone and between Facebook and my friends. I still talk about it. I will probably talk about it until the day I die. I will never forget this experience.

21. “The wall”: Not an actual wall but the wall some runners hit at a certain mileage. Mile 21 was my wall. It was the furthest I have ever ran. I had to keep telling myself to keep going. I crushed that wall into a million pieces. It didn’t stand a chance.

22. Read those race signs and posters: Sometimes it’s what gave me that little push to keep going. Some were motivational and some were downright funny. No matter the type of race read those signs.

23.  Oh foam roller take me away: Who would have thought a piece of PVC piping wrapped in a foamy material could make that post long run feel so good. You love to hate the thing but boy it sure helps.

24. Say goodbye to your once pretty toenails/feet: I lost 2 toenails in the process while training for a marathon. I did all the things they say to prevent loosing them but I still lost them. Also my once pretty feet turned into a disgusting mess.

25. You may inspire those friends/family members to pick their life up: I have been told by some many since I ran this marathon that I inspired them to become healthy, to start running again, to sign up for long distance races. It’s such a good feeling to know something I did inspired someone else.

26.  Last but not least:  I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT! The end.

2014: My Year of Running

Another year has come and gone. I have done about 10 races this year. It’s been quite a year for me. I ran my first marathon and ran a few half marathons and a few 5ks. So let’s take a few minutes and give you my awards for the races I’ve done this year.

Most Scenic Course- The most scenic course was when I ran the Walt Disney Marathon on January 12th. I mean who wouldn’t enjoy running through all the Disney parks and get to see a lot of back lots of Disney World?


Most Challenging Course- Most challenging course I would have to say was when I ran the  Beachside Half Marathon. I have ran this course before but for some reason the 2 bridges always kill me and the heat was also a factor. Looks easy, doesn’t it? Well if you are familiar with the bridges in Florida that go over to the beaches you may understand how steep they are and they are quite challenging. The course is beautiful after you pass over the bridges.

beachside half map 20 x 30.inddBest Expo- Oh this is a no brainer. I did 3 Disney races this year and I will say they have the BEST expos with all kinds of goodies and great entertainment and runDisney has the BEST merchandise to go with your accomplishments. (I own the pink one I DID IT!)


Best Post-Race Food/Beverages- This would have to go to the Space Coast Half Marathon & Marathon. Not only did they have free breakfast for all race participants but FREE BEER! Sorry but it’s rewarding after running either the half or the marathon.

Best Swag- All the Disney races give you the best swag. Between the shirts and the race bibs. I guess since we pay a pretty penny for the races they better treat us to nice swag.


Most Unique Medal- a unique medal would have to go to the Space Coast Half Marathon. This years medal was based off the spaceship Challenger. Each star represents all the lives lost on the Challenger. Makes the medal even more unique.


Favorite Race Shirt- This would have to go to Space Coast Marathon & Half Marathon. I absolutely love the shirts this year. They are long sleeved tech shirts. They went with a different company this year and I hope they stay with them. They turned out AWESOME!


Favorite Overall Race- I ran so many great races this year and it’s hard to choose. But I would have to say Walt Disney Marathon is my favorite overall race. I may sound repetitive. Maybe because this was my first marathon and it just means a lot to me. I enjoyed the course, the volunteers and people cheering you along. The experience was just AMAZING!


Best Course Support- Hands down again this goes to WDW Marathon. Not only did I run this marathon but I had tons of support along the route. I had my best friend waiting for me at the Magic Kingdom. I bawled my eyes out when I finally saw her standing there. That gave me the extra push I needed seeing her waiting. All the support along the course is just crazy. So many people telling you “You’re almost there” when you still have 20 more miles is go just makes it better.


Race You Are Most Proud of Yourself for Completing- WDW Marathon. It was my first marathon. As much as I hated it after finishing and I swore to god I was never going to run another marathon ever again. Months later I decided I can’t let this marathon hold me back from EVER doing another. I did sign up for another marathon but had to back down to the half. I’m nowhere near ready but hoping another one is in my future.

Race Recap}: Space Coast Half Marathon


Well, I’m officially back from my vacation from the cold and I was only back for 1 days and I ran a half marathon. No rest for the wicked I suppose. I stayed at a hotel in Cocoa Beach, it’s not too far from where I live but the early morning race time and the complimentary bus shuttle to the course is a plus. My good friend Jordin stayed with me since she was running the half too. I told her right away I have a goal time I was pushing for and I had plans to run with a pace group. She was totally okay with it. She had zero time to train for this race with her schooling and her plans on moving. This was her 4th half marathon so she was just in it to run it the best she could.
We shuttled to the course around 5:00 am, it was pretty busy and a lot of people already piling in. This year they had moved up the max capacity up and it was completely SOLD OUT in the half and full marathon. It was a little chilly and we were just finding a spot to stay warm for a bit until we had to walk to the start. We ended up walking to the start a little early so I could find the pace group I wanted to stick with. They were playing some music and of course “The Final Countdown” by Europe is the best song to get warmed up to also with it being a space-themed race it was PERFECT.

They announced for everyone to start moving towards the start so it was starting to get a little crowded. I found the 2:10 pacer and was hoping to stick with him the entire time. While they played a few more songs they finally announced that they were going to start with the national anthem. Then it was BLAST OFF TIME! It was still pretty dark and the course started to narrow along the river so I was hoping not to trip on anything. A lot of people were putting on their flashlights on their phones which were a BIG help. Mile 1-3 went by pretty quick. I was starting to slow a little bit but could see my pacer little ways away. I was still determined to get caught back up to him. Finally, it was sunrise I really wish I had pulled out my phone to snap a picture it was so pretty. But I didn’t want any distractions I was set to try and PR and I didn’t want anything to keep me back. I was doing great until mile 5.5. I had lost my 2:10 pacer he’s long gone no longer in sight, I did, however, find the 2:15 Jeff Galloway run/walk pace group and stuck with them for the most part. Then I realized I had to pee (I’m never the runner who waits before a race to use the bathroom, I just pray I don’t ever have that urge along the way) well the urge came and I knew from the course last year there are porter potties after the loop around mile 6.5 or 7. So I figured I’d hold off until I could get there. Well, I made the loop back out and all 3 were occupied with a line forming. Oh, I kept going again I didn’t want anything to hold me back. As I focused I forgot I had to go I passed another porter potty and then it hit me. I hope I could make it to the next one. So I stopped and waiting to tap my foot. I had already lost my 2:15 Jeff Galloway pacer has been long gone. I thought for sure I wasn’t going to PR. Finally relief I could run again without a full bladder. The rest of the miles started to fly by probably because I wasn’t so focused anymore and just gave up on a PR and just run this race and enjoy it.


Around mile 9 and 10 my hip started to ache a little bit. I had taken a fall on some slippery leaves on a run while I was up in New Hampshire the week before and I’m sure it had to do with that and not properly stretching. The pain was pretty dull it came and went and I just ignored it and kept on trucking along. We started to see some marathoners coming onto the course on the other side of road and it was amazing to see these elite runners and how fast they are. How I’d love to be as fast as them. Then there was some light at the end of the tunnel. Guess what pacer comes up beside me? The 2:15 pace group. I think I started to cry and thought YES! YES! YES! I’m still in this race with a potential PR. I started to pick up my pace and they were getting ahead of me but I stayed as close as I could. My power song came on and it was like I had some gas left in me. I TOOK OFF!! Finally,  I came up to mile 13 and said YES .10 of a mile to go. We ran along the stadium gazebo and I almost ran over a man who thought it was ok to cross to the other side by walking in front me. Sorry but not sorry. I saw the time and again started to tear up. I WILL PR THIS RACE!!! I crossed the finish line with a time of 2:18 not my goal time but a PR. That was my unofficial time and wasn’t sure the exact official results yet. I loved that they announced some names as they crossed the finish line.

I waited for my friend Jordin to cross the finish line so I could run it a little with her. She texted me and said, “1 MILE LEFT”. Bless her heart for someone who didn’t train as much as she wanted she sure was having a good time and finished it strong. I am so proud of her.We met up again after she got her medal we saw BEER! Yeah, it was only 8:30 am and we wanted to know where everyone was getting the beer from. FREE BEER its for me. After we found our rewarding beer we set off to find some breakfast. Pancakes never tasted so good. We sat down and rested our legs and enjoyed our breakfast. Then my phone notification went off with my official race results. I CRIED LIKE A BABY SHOVELING BEER AND PANCAKES DOWN MY THROAT. I ‘d my 5th half marathon. OFFICIAL TIME 2:16:04 and I think the 2:15 pacer for waking me up from my slump. If I could hug you I would and thank you so much!  I came in 65th place in my age group out of 310.


Once Jordin and I finished our beer and breakfast we had to go find our shuttle bus to take us back to the hotel so we could shower and head home. I was still on cloud 9 over this BIG PR. Knocking off another 7 minutes off my last half marathon which was in October is a big deal for me. I’m sorry for those on Facebook who had to listen to me bragging about it. But it’s just something you work hard for and it shows. This year had been a year of improvement on my race times. I will get to that in my year to end post in the next coming weeks. I am so thankful for all the supportive people who surround me every day and keep me going. I will be back next year to run the Space Coast Half Marathon or who knows maybe I will run the marathon. I haven’t decided yet and I know I have a few months to think about it. I’m in it for the #bigbangseries year 2 complete. Looking forward to next years.


Boston You’re my Home


On Friday I will be flying home for the Thanksgiving holiday to stay with my family. My daughter will be taking the trip with me and she hasn’t been to Massachusetts since she was 2. I’m excited to show her around the places I grew up and explore Boston with her. In light of it all, I figured I’d share some beautiful photos of Massachusetts.

I can’t wait to be home for a week. I feel like I am going to be a complete tourist. Currently living in Florida is beautiful and has its perks, but being from New England it’s where the old history is and it’s just breathtaking.

Here are some questions Montana left me to answer:

1. What’s your favorite quote and why does it resonate with you?  My favorite quote “she turned her can’t into the can, and her dreams into plans”. This is becoming my favorite quote after I ran my first half marathon on March 23, 2013. After that I know I could do anything.


2. If you were stuck on an island with all your basic needs provided for you (food, shelter, water, clothing) what 3 additional items would you bring with you? Hmm, this one is a little tough. I have so many things I’d love to have with me if I was stuck on an island. If my family is included on being stuck with me I would choose my best friend Lisa. I’d go crazy if I couldn’t speak to her at least once a day. Also, a good book, if I’m going to be stuck on the island for a while a good book would help pass the time. Last but not least my running shoes. I mean running around the island I could search for new things and sightsee. Hope I’m stuck on a BIG island.


3. What’s the last movie you saw? The last movie I saw was with my daughter last week. We saw Big Hero 6 and we loved it.

Big_Hero_6_film_poster-210x3004. Do you have a favorite workout item? Running shoes, clothes, fitness equipment? Saucony running shoes all the way. I have run in Nike’s, Asics but Saucony’s are my absolute favorite and it’s the only brand shoe I will run in.

5. What’s the unique workout class you have ever taken? I took a spinning class a few years ago and it was the only time. It was pretty intense and my legs were sore for weeks. But what a great workout.

spinning6.  If you had to go without one modern convenience for the rest of your life, what would you give up and why? If I had to chose it would be my cell phone. It takes up so much of my life, especially when I’m bored. If I go without maybe I will be more engaged with those around me.

7. Which relative are you closest to? My Mom. I don’t know what I’d do without her. She is my rock and knows I can go to her with any problems. Since I live over 1,400 miles away from my Mom. It’s hard not being able to see her every day but we still make trips to visit each other or a simple phone call. I love you, Mom.


8. Would you ever do an obstacle course race? If you have done one, which one did you do? I have done one once back in 2013. It was local and it was fun. I would love to do a tough mudder because I love endurance.


9. What’s your guilty pleasure? I love books. I love reading a lot of new adult books. I have read over 50 books so far this year and my goal was 100. I may not get there. But the year isn’t over yet.


10. What’s your best/happiest childhood memory? Every summer we’d vacation in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We would stay up there for a week or 2 and we would go to StoryLand. This is one of my fondest memories, especially the talking tree.

Race Bucket list


We all have that race we just want to run eventually. I know I have quite a few races I have on my bucket list and would love to run from the Boston Marathon to Ragnar Relay.

Boston Marathon (ever since I was a kid watching this race on TV, I knew someday I would run this race and hopefully someday I will)

Ragnar Relay (I would love to get a HUGE group together and run a leg in the ragnar relay)

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon (If I had a choice on where to the RnR it would be in Savannah, GA)

7 Mile Bridge Run (This race starts in Marathon, Florida along the 7 mile bridge to Key West)

New York City Marathon (I’ve never been to NYC, so what not a great introduction to NY by marathon)

Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge (This race takes place at Disney World, one day you run a half marathon next day the marathon)

Diva Half Marathon (Who wouldn’t want some roses and bubbly after finishing 13.1 miles?)

Princess Half Marathon (This race has been on my list since I ran the 5k for Princess Half weekend since 2011)

Nike Woman’s Half Marathon (Now wouldn’t you love a handsome suited fireman handing over a Tiffany necklace at the finish line?)

{Race Recap}: Space Coast Classic 15k


I have never run a 15k race before. So I signed up for the Space Coast Classic 15k and used it also as a training run for the Space Coast half marathon which is coming up in a few weeks. This was the first year SCC was supplying medals to all 15k and 2m finishers and the theme was the classic muscle car a Mustang. We are such BIG mustang fans in our household. Another reason I had to run this awesome race.

I had to get up early to head to the course. The race took place about 30 minutes away. It was a pretty chilly morning for Florida. It was in the low 50’s and we had a very windy breeze coming off the ocean. The race was on the beach side through really nice neighbourhoods. I figured I would head for the bathrooms first then after I decided to do some stretching and loosen up. I was shivering the entire time and just couldn’t wait for the race to start and hopefully warm up.

I lined up in the corral and they sang the national anthem. The race was to start at 7:15 am. After the national anthem, they went over race details and letting us know all the turns and to listen to the volunteers directing us where to go and turn. I was worried about water stops at this race so I bought a Nathan handheld bottle. It was the best investment. It never once bothered me being on my hand and it was the perfect amount of water for the distance.

The buzzer went off and we were on our way to run a 15k. The first 3 miles went by pretty quickly. I felt like I was being carried along this race. Mile after mile came and went. I was shocked when I hit the 10k mark and looked down at my watch and saw 58 minutes. I teared up, I couldn’t believe it said that time. I knocked 8 minutes off my last 10k time. See I told you I felt like I was being carried.


The last few miles I felt myself slowing down. The wind was getting pretty bad. Nothing like being forced in the direction of the wind. It wasn’t as tough until I got to A1A and took the turn and again was running in the direction of the wind, this time I felt like the flash busting through that wind. I pushed as hard as I could through the wind. Then there was the relief when we took another turn and thank god for houses to blocking the wind from hitting me again. I hit the 9-mile mark and took a few seconds just to do a fast walk. My left hip was starting to ache a little bit. Once the dull ache went away I ran to finish the last .3 miles of the race. When I saw the finish line I hauled my butt towards it wind and all.

It was PR for me not only for a 10k time but also for the 15k since it was my first 15k race. I was very pleased with the overall race. But I wish they could have had a little more volunteers and maybe a few more water stops for those who didn’t have water with them. The race director was very supportive and was more than happy to give me a 2nd medal to send to my IRUN4 buddy Nolan. She has also signed herself up to be matched.

I went to check out the official results and couldn’t be happier. I was 5th place in my age group out of 15 ladies and my overall pace AHH! I kept a pretty steady pace the entire time. I’ve been working on speed training a lot and will continue to keep working on it. I plan to run this race again next year.
